What do you do when you are giving your all and it's not enough?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Lake Kivu Fish Company was birthed out of a conversation centered around one specific question; What happens when a local church is doing all that it can to help the surrounding community, but the need is far larger than what the members of the church can sustain?\u00a0 This is not a new question, but it has risen to the forefront because of the COVID pandemic.\u00a0\u00a0Churches are trying to help their communities with necessities, but with already limited resources, this is proving challenging.<\/p>

A new source of revenue had to be found which could serve\u00a0the needs of the church but was not dependent on resources found outside the\u00a0country.\u00a0 That is where the idea of\u00a0starting Lake Kivu Fish Company came from.\u00a0 Rwanda is dependent on expensive, imported fish from places like China and despite\u00a0these imports, malnutrition and low birth weight are still very real realities for\u00a0the Rwandan population.<\/p>

Lake Kivu Fish Company uses a farming method called aquaculture\u00a0<\/span>to raise fish in floating cages until they reach harvest weight when they are\u00a0<\/span>caught and taken to market.\u00a0 During this \u201cgrow-out\u201d\u00a0<\/span>period, the farm is operated by students who are enrolled in our educational\u00a0<\/span>program.\u00a0 They will receive training on all\u00a0<\/span>aspects of aquaculture including cage construction, feeding, feed conversion ratios,\u00a0<\/span>and harvesting.\u00a0 The goal is that once\u00a0<\/span>graduated, these students will return to their communities to start fish farms\u00a0<\/span>of their own.<\/span><\/p>

As the farm grows it will expand into commercial hatchery\u00a0operations and high-volume feed production.<\/p>

People often ask where our students come from and the answer is \u201ceverywhere!\u201d\u00a0 With that said, we do try to make sure that we are serving the most vulnerable members of our community.\u00a0 Sometimes this involves students who have been rejected by society because they turned to prostitution as a desperate act of survival.\u00a0 Sometimes our students have been in trouble with the police because they were caught smuggling drugs in exchange for food.\u00a0 Sometimes our students are just normal, energetic youth who are ready to learn and make a difference in their country.\u00a0 We love hearing our student\u2019s stories, we do not care about past mistakes, what we care about is where they are headed!<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
